Saving Money and Changing Lives

Saturday, February 16th, 2013

When money is tight and people are on a fixed budget, their natural  response is to hold back on spending, especially when it comes to  anything that we consider to be non-essential. Additionally, when  people don’t have confidence in the future, we will become even more  cautious about what we are spending our money on. It’s under these conditions that people need to step  up to the plate and take really good care of their automobiles. As we  all know, the cost of unexpected repairs can be financially devastating,  and if you don’t have the money for repairs, you’ll more than  likely don’t have the money to buy a new vehicle either.

So do this: Sit down with our service advisor or myself Mike Moore (owner) and we’ll help you understand that during these uncertain economic times, one of the best  investments you could ever make is in properly maintaining your automobiles. We will discuss all of the cost-saving benefits of vehicle maintenance, and break the investment down into meaningful and digestible numbers  that you can easily understand.

For example, you may discover that with the more popular vehicles,  the actual investment in the maintenance services that our advisors are  recommending works out to less than 50 cents a day, and what you get in return for that small investment is amazing. You will be  protecting warranties, you will be protecting the value of the automobiles, you will be squeezing every mile out of every gallon of  gasoline, and you will have the peace of mind that comes with having a  well maintained vehicle. Perhaps most importantly, you will be reducing  the risk of unexpected and costly failures that can be particularly  crushing during these tough economic times. When you break down the cost  to a daily amount, and are able to see all of these benefits for less than the price of morning  coffee, the decision becomes a no-brainer.

While making the most of this maintenance you can also, help save our environment, by extending the life of your car to over 300,000 miles. It is our ethical responsibility to help. Most of the time we can see just how crucial maintenance is when it comes to protecting our safety, the safety of our families, vehicles, environment and without question, our checkbooks too.

So stop by today for a “NO COST” Auto Heath Inspection.

Electric Cars to Become Popular by 2017

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

Electric Cars WilmingtonWith rising gas prices, the recent heightening of environmental awareness, and a useful long-term investment leading to potentially huge savings overtime, the electric car is almost a necessity for our future. Check out the following article from the people at the forefront of Electric Cars.

Article By Myron Kukla | The Grand Rapids Press

Plug-in electric cars will become popular when gas prices hit $5 a gallon — probably in 2017.

That was the projection of Smart Transportation analyst Dave Hurst of Pike Research, speaking as part of the Lakeshore Advantage Michigan Smart Coast series on advanced energy storage.

“The reason you don’t see a lot of plug-ins right now is because there’s not a lot of them available. In Michigan, you can only buy the Volt,” said Hurst, addressing about 250 area business executives from a cross section of local industry at the Doubletree Conference Center in Holland.

He said consumers also are waiting on battery range increases and price drops on personal electric vehicles before considering purchases.

The buildup to 1 million plug-in vehicles on the road likely will occur in 2016, Hurst said. In the meantime, lithium ion battery manufacturers such as the Holland-based LG Chem battery plant and Johnson Controls battery division are going to have excess capacity for about five years.

“I’d advise them to focus on the world market and sell their batteries for what ever applications are out there for use as power supplies to storage until the domestic market catches up,” said Hurst noting the U.S. plug-in battery market should reach about $3.2 billion 2017 and $14.6 billion worldwide.

Randy Thelen, president of Lakeshore Advantage economic development agency in Zeeland, said the impact of two major battery producers in Holland already has had a positive economic impact on the area.

“A total of 16 suppliers for the battery companies have moved into the local market and are quietly opening operations from 10,000 to 20,000 square-feet,” Thelen said.

And those companies are hiring new workers.

Hurst said research shows that the optimal price point for plug-in vehicles will be at $23,750, according to consumer surveys. Another key sales point for consumers will be 100-mile charge-range vehicles, although most commuting is done within 40 miles with average round trips coming in at 22.2 miles.

“All of the (plug-ins) have gas engines, so the charge range is really more a psychological factor,” he said.

What might be the engine that really kick starts the plug-in industry is fleet truck purchases by companies.

“The recovery cost on electric trucks should be two to six years. They should have an annual fuel cost of $960 compared to the cost of a gas hybrid of $7,000 a year,” Hurst said.

Bruce Wickmann, president of West Shore Aviation Management at the West Michigan Regional Airport in Holland, bought his 2012 Chevy Volt plug-in last fall and believes it’s the future of cars.

”In 1,500 miles, I’ve used three gallons of fuel. I’m averaging 500 to 700 miles to the gallon,” said Wickmann, who only had to use the gas engine on a few trips to Grand Rapids.

He estimates his Volt gets 40 to 45 miles on a charge in warm weather and 30 to 32 miles per charge in winter.

”Even with the government rebate of $7,500, it’s not going to be cost-efficient for a few years,” he said.

”But I believe we’ve got to start making the change and people need to get on board with electric vehicles.”

2011 Riverfest in Downtown Wilmington, NC!

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

Wilmington Riverfest

Next weekend, on October 7th, 8th and 9th, Riverfest will take place in Wilmington. Riverfest, being beyond something we see on signs and advertised all around town is actually a huge occasion, full of great events, culture and history! Come out next weekend to enjoy events like Two Car Shows, Invasion of the Pirates Boast Flotilla, Live Entertainment and Music, a Beer Garden, an 8K race, Comic Book and Coin Show exhibit, Arts and Crafts Vendors and more.

The history is actually a neat one, since Riverfest dates back to 1979! Check out the history, listed on the Riverfest website and scroll down for links to learn more about the eventful weekend!

Wilmington Riverfest 2011Flashback to 1978.. Downtown is deserted… retailers have moved to “The Mall” and other shopping centers, with only a few old-timers remaining on Front Street. Farsighted developers have made stores and warehouses on the northern end of town into the Cotton Exchange, a collection of specialty shops, pubs, and restaurants. Old abandoned homes and shops located on the southern end of the retail area have become Chandler’s Wharf. The restoration of these two anchors of downtown were acts of fate. Located between these restorations were shabby warehouses, long forgotten wharves, and a parking deck. The historic old buildings, marvelous architecture, and the majestic river were not appreciated or enjoyed. Wilmington’s downtown needed a miracle.

In February 1979, a group of Wilmingtonians interested in Historic Downtown and the arts, began the organization of a cultural street festival designed to bring residents back downtown. This would be a free, family oriented celebration called Riverfest.

The first Riverfest was October 4-6, 1979. Forty volunteers participated, and the budget consisted of $5500, all donations. There were four concessions, trolley rides, and fireworks. Riverfest was a roaring success! It was decided to continue the festival the next year, and again, and again on the first weekend in October.

Over thirty years later Riverfest consists of: Twenty plus committees, over 300 volunteers, a budget of $90,000, over 200 craft vendors, 35 concessions booths, entertainment on various stages, Saturday night fireworks, Run the River 8K, the Great Wine Waiter’s Race, A Children’s Area, and more than 6 sporting events with contests for all ages. The end result is a half mile of free family entertainment, dependant on sponsorships and donations from community businesses and organizations. The economic impact on Riverfest on the surrounding community has been estimated at over three million dollars with attendance in excess of 100,000 per year.

As delightful as the festival outcome is, the end result is awarding of scholarships for marine related studies at Cape Fear Community College. The ultimate goal of Riverfest is to increase the amount of scholarship funds each year to Cape Fear Community College.

The greatest part of this miracle called Riverfest is not only the bits and pieces that come together in such a grand way, but the people who make it happen. We are a family united in celebrating our heritage and the beautiful Cape Fear River. The spirit to continue this tradition has been with us all these years, and for that we are very grateful.

Much change has happened to Historic Downtown Wilmington during the history of Riverfest. There are shops, galleries, restaurants, river cruises, The River Walk, and Riverfront Park. Front Street is once again a viable business district, not wholly by Riverfest, but by the efforts of the business community who were and are interested in preserving and enhancing our heritage. Riverfest helped to bring the interest back to downtown Wilmington. People who had not been on the riverfront for many years now brought their families to enjoy the fireworks, stayed for the entertainment, and began to enjoy what had been here all along.

NC Tornado

A severe, three-day thunderstorm tore through the Southeast over the weekend, hitting the region with rain, hail and tornadoes, laying down a horrific path of destruction and claiming 45 lives.

The storm, which stretched from Oklahoma to Virginia, is the deadliest of the season so far.

”I’ve seen a lot of damage in North Carolina over the years but this is the most catastrophic I’ve ever seen, the destruction is massive,” said North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue during a news conference.

The state saw the greatest number of fatalities, with 22. The National Weather Service (NWS) said it is the worst storm seen in the state for 27 years.

Records from NWS indicate more that 90 tornadoes struck North Carolina on Saturday, which is more than four times the average in a typical year.

In all, more than 1,000 reports of severe weather came through the NWS throughout the weekend. As many as 222 tornadoes may have been produced over the three days.

Five states reported fatalities as a result of the storms: Six occurred in Virginia, seven in Alabama, one in Mississippi, two in Oklahoma and 22 in North Carolina.

The storms destroyed buildings, uprooted trees, tossed homes, cars and trucks, and left many people across the states devastated.

North Carolina resident Mike Powell told WECT he tried to ride out the storm from his home, which was tossed 30 feet.

“It’s a mess, but it makes you appreciate life,” Powell said.

The American Red Cross is working around the clock to help provide relief to people affected by the path of destruction. The organization will provide shelter, food, water, clothing and other necessities to those who need it.

“Families have lost everything, and we are doing what we can to help them as they figure out what’s next,” said Charley Shimanski, senior vice president, Red Cross Disaster Services. “We’ll continue to help them in the weeks ahead as they try to get back on their feet.”

On Monday, crews were busy assessing the damage and determining what will have to be done to put the pieces back together while many residents are being left to deal with all the wreckage.

According to the National Climatic Data Center, the U.S. has sustained 99 weather related disasters over the last 30 years, with overall damages costs exceeding $1 billion. The total costs of the events are above $725 billion.

The emotional toll, however, may not be calculated for quite some time.

St. Stephen, SC, resident Craig Robinson told WBTV that he was standing inside his church when he began to hear the wind from an approaching tornado.

“I moved up to the front door and noticed that the whole roof had collapsed,” he said. “I went down on my knees and asked the lord to have mercy.”

The church was leveled by the tornado except for the area where Robinson had been standing. When it was all over, Robinson said he stood up and noticed the front door was wide open.

“The Lord just opened up the front door for me because I usually have it locked. So I just walked out and looked around, and said, ‘Wow.’”

Robinson said of the church, “It looks bad, but I thank God he brought me through it. We can always get another building.”
